Three years after his bitter confrontation with ruthless robber Alexei Smolin, FSB Colonel Pavel Belov spots his old enemy on the street. Several months before Alexei’s “resurrection,” Sergei Grachev, the head of a major company, was facing a crisis: corporate raiders were trying to seize his business. He turned to a relative for help—the warden of the penal colony where Smolin was serving a life sentence. Smolin was offered his freedom in exchange for solving Grachev’s problems and eliminating the threat.

Grachev’s enemies die one by one at Smolin’s hands, but the businessman is in no hurry to let such a skilled professional go, realizing he can use him to expand his business unopposed. Meanwhile, Smolin’s comrade-in-arms Mirko flies in from Europe to join him. Alexei begins a game of his own, making it clear to Belov that he is alive, free, and has no intention of leaving him alone…

Pavel and Nikolai discover how Smolin was given a chance to get out of prison and how many people he has since killed on the businessman’s orders. Meanwhile, Grachev’s men kidnap Smolin’s son, killing his nanny. Belov visits the penal colony and demands that the warden reveal the truth about Smolin’s escape, but the warden plays dumb. Back in Moscow, a devastating blow awaits Belov: his daughter Lera has disappeared. Unexpectedly, Smolin suggests they join forces to find and rescue their children…

Mirko finds a daring young woman named Kristina who can win Grachev’s trust. Smolin demands that Belov arrange Krugly’s escape from prison, as they need his help to find and rescue their children. Meanwhile, Grachev gives Smolin a new assignment: eliminate Svetlana, the daughter of his former business partner.

Kruglov is transferred to Moscow for questioning and further investigation. Smolin and Belov devise an ingenious plan to break him out and successfully carry it out. Grachev soon receives word of Krugly’s escape.

Belov trains Kristina in the finer points of undercover work so she can infiltrate Grachev’s inner circle. Meanwhile, Smolin orchestrates a car crash that kills Grachev’s wife. FSB officer Nikolai Denisov, an acquaintance of Belov’s, learns that Smolin is alive and at large. The woman Alexei is supposed to kill next turns out to be Natasha’s Canadian friend.

Grachev struggles to cope with his wife’s tragic death, and Kristina is the only one who can comfort him. Her infiltration of his inner circle is now complete. Meanwhile, Krugly begins a relationship with Nadya, a woman he recently saved from being raped

At Grachev’s country estate, Kristina meets his daughter Alisa, and the two clash. Belov discovers where Lera and Pavlik are being held. Smolin suffers a breakdown brought on by powerful medication and opens fire on random passersby.

Belov, Mirko, and Krugly plan an operation to rescue the children. Still wearing his ankle bracelet, Smolin is forced to stay in Moscow. The assault on the house where Lera and Pavlik are being held ends in failure, and Krugly is seriously wounded in the shootout. Grachev removes Smolin’s ankle bracelet and gives him one final order: kill Belov and his wife.

Nadya, whom Krugly saved from rapists, is desperate to visit her hero. He has no choice but to invite her to Lanchak’s apartment, where he is recovering from surgery. Smolin meets with Kristina and asks her to plant explosives in the guardhouse at Grachev’s mansion. When he visits Grachev, he refuses to carry out the order to kill Lera, prompting the businessman to question whether Alexei has really killed her parents. Grachev then orders Smolin himself to be killed…

With Miroslav’s help, Smolin manages to evade his pursuers. After Alexei tells him that Grachev shot an arrow at an apple on Lera’s head, Belov plans to kidnap the businessman’s daughter and exchange her for the hostages. Soon, Grachev gambles with the lives of Smolin’s and Belov’s children in a game of heads or tails…

Nadya tells Krugly over the phone that she is pregnant. After visiting her, FSB officer Denisov threatens to put her behind bars unless Krugly meets his demands. Smolin encounters Denisov’s team outside Krugly’s mother’s apartment and kills all but one of the operatives…

Krugly manages to arrange a meeting with Nadya to persuade her to stay with him. She shocks him by revealing that she plans to have an abortion. Meanwhile, Natasha anonymously sends Grachev’s daughter Alisa a video of her father shooting at the children he is holding hostage.

Belov demands that Mednik secure the children’s release, but Mednik keeps stalling. Krugly looks for a way to persuade Nadya to keep the baby. Kristina admits to Belov that she deliberately saved Grachev’s life and that she is in love with Smolin…

Belov puts Mednik under surveillance, weighing whether to eliminate the threat immediately or keep him alive for now, hoping Mednik can persuade Grachev to release the children. Armed with a pistol, Natasha heads to Grachev’s office. She manages only to wound him before she is seized and taken to a warehouse…

Having miraculously survived an attempt on his life, Grachev decides to strike back immediately. To carry out his plan, he has three gang members serving life sentences released from a penal colony and fitted with ankle bracelets like the one Smolin wore. Kristina learns from Grachev’s daughter that the businessman is alive and passes the news on to Smolin.

Natasha manages to get word to Belov about her situation. He calls Grachev and proposes a trade: Natasha in exchange for the person leaking information about the businessman to his enemies. Grachev agrees and arrives at the meeting… with Kristina.

Belov tries to stop Kristina from telling Smolin that her cover has been blown. He takes her out of Moscow almost by force, intending to hide her at a friend’s place for a while. Grachev’s daughter Alisa follows her father to find out what shady dealings he is involved in. She sees Belov’s daughter being brought in and locked up, then calls Natasha and arranges to meet her at a café. While fleeing Grachev’s guards, Natasha accidentally hits Alisa with her car.

Belov and Smolin free the children and send them to safety with Natasha. They make one last attempt to take down the untouchable billionaire. During a shootout, Grachev manages to wound Smolin, but Belov gets him out. The two sworn enemies point their guns at each other, unaware that Grachev has already met his end...
